Education and fun go hand in hand: This Montessori set of activities is made up of matching, counting and sorting games designed to develop visual perception and shape identification skills. The child can do a variety of exercises with all these activities involving stacking, sorting, counting, matching, making patterns and building. All of the activities in the set encourage both tactile and visual sensory input and are an excellent way to introduce new vocabulary by teaching the child the names of the different shapes and how to use descriptive language to describe them. By using their hands to sort and by handling real objects, instead of looking at pictures, the child is able to engage and this is beneficial for all-around learning.

This Montessori set is a beginning maths skill, teaching children the similarities or differences between objects and how to group similar objects. By sorting, children start learning basic numerical concepts that develop into grouping of numbers as they get older. The tasks encourage sensory refinement by teaching the child to detect the similarities and differences visually thus also developing eye muscle sense.

The activities are also designed to teach the child height awareness, long and short, biggest to smallest as well as how certain shapes fit together. Children have a natural desire to create order and make sense of their world. These Montessori materials give them a sense of purpose and a feeling of capability by being in control of what colours and shapes go where.  The activities also teach logical thinking by using comparison and contrast. They teach the child self-correction as they are able to see for themselves when the shapes or heights of the cylinders don’t match up or when the shapes or cylinders don’t fit into the correct holes or in the case of the multiple geometry puzzle shapes, placed in the incorrect position as they won’t fit. This also helps the child to develop decision making skills as they are the ones who get to decide what piece goes where. This gives them a sense of self-confidence and achievement.

Why buy this item: Children are attracted by the bright colours and challenges of the different activities and feel a sense of achievement on successful completion of the tasks. It is many different,   fun-learning skills, that engage visual and tactile senses, but in ways that are more of a game than work. Children can begin with these materials from as early as 2 years old and continue with it until their skills are refined. Children will go back to these activities again and again to re-feel the sense of achievement and satisfaction they get from completing the tasks successfully.
